Was this really programmed by a band director?
Yes! bandOffice was programmed from scratch by Jon Brown, a high school band director in the Central Florida area.
If you're a band director, what qualifies you to program a web application?
In terms of computer programming credentials, you'll just have to explore the site and decide for yourself. My training is, of course, in music education, so I have no fancy computer science degree to show you. However, I have been web coding on the side for over twenty-four years, and I have been putting that to use in my own program for the last fifteen. So you can check it out, and I promise you it all works. I use it every day. After years of having people ask how they can get the various features for their programs, here it is, ready for you!
Why did you develop bandOffice?
About eleven years ago, one of our band parents had built our program a website where we kept track of band fees. When his daughter graduated, he stopped maintaining it, and eventually it stopped working altogether. To put it back together, I started by reading PHP and MySQL for Dummies, and quickly realized I had a powerful tool that could not only track band fees, but do all kinds of other things. I've been expanding its features ever since.
How is bandOffice different from other programs?
Every feature of bandOffice was programmed because, as a band director, I actually wanted to use it. This isn't some site with a bunch of useless features designed by a computer science major. Personally, I think the most unique feature is the Chaperone's Assistant, which is so helpful for long trips where you've got a lot of kids and a lot of buses. You can check out some of the other features on the front page.
